LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Lung compliance measurement in mice

Yuh-Chin Tony Huang

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina

TO THE EDITOR: I read the article by Martin et al. (1) in the September 2007 issue of AJP-Lung. The authors presented interesting observations of increased lung compliance in TIMP-3 null mice during a septic insult. Lung compliance was measured by the linear regression method, the constant phase model, and indirectly by light microscopy morphometry. However, they failed to provide data on static lung compliance using the pressure-volume curve, the gold standard for measuring lung recoil. It would have been an easy postmortem measurement in an open chest mouse using flexiVent. Without the measurement of true lung recoil property, their results remain uncertain.
